I ordered a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8 GB of memory and a pile of parts to go with it.
The order marked the start of another small computer project. A Raspberry Pi is a complete Linux-capable computer on a compact board. It still needs the ordinary supporting pieces that a laptop hides inside its case.
Power, storage, cooling, a case, and the right cables all have to match the board. The Pi 5 also produces enough heat under sustained work that cooling is part of the setup rather than an optional finishing touch.
I had an order, not a finished build. The hardware had been selected and purchased. Assembly, operating-system installation, network setup, and the actual workload would come after delivery.
I had spent years working with servers and Linux systems, but the scale of this machine was different. It could sit on a desk or shelf, run quietly, and handle a narrow task without turning a general-purpose computer into permanent infrastructure.
The reason for keeping the artifact is not the store receipt or the exact price. It is the return to a familiar kind of work: choose a small set of compatible parts, install a system, and make the machine do one defined job.
The useful fact was the hardware choice. It was the current Raspberry Pi board, the higher-memory version, and enough equipment to turn it into a working computer.
For now, the project existed as a purchase and a plan. The next record would need to show what the Pi became after it arrived and whether the selected parts worked together as expected.
