I was working from home today, but the storage list still had two items on it.

First, push a MogileFS change that would enable the read slave and apply the patch. Second, confirm that storage traffic was on the correct load balancer, which should have been number two.

That was the whole operational plan in the email. Two lines, both specific enough for the team to act on.

The first change was about spreading read work. A storage system can have capacity sitting nearby and still perform badly if requests keep landing in the wrong place. Enabling another read path was one way to use the system more effectively, provided the patch behaved as expected.

The second item was even less glamorous. Check the routing assumption. We believed storage belonged on a particular load balancer, but “should be” is not the same as verified. Infrastructure has a habit of preserving old decisions long after everybody assumes a newer one is active.

There was nothing heroic about either task. That is why I like the note.

A big operations organization is built from this kind of follow-through. The architecture may be sound, the hardware may be installed, and the code may be ready, but the real system still depends on somebody confirming where traffic goes and whether a change made it all the way into use.

Working from home did not change the standard. The team needed a small, legible plan and a clear definition of what we were trying to accomplish before the day ended. The email did not contain a long meeting transcript or an elaborate ticket hierarchy. It named the two things.

This entry also sits in a year when our storage work kept resurfacing from different angles: replication queues, rebalancing, added data nodes, network throttling, and user-visible latency. None of those changes existed alone. They were pieces of the same effort to make a very large system more predictable.

Today’s piece was modest: enable the read slave, make sure storage was on the right load balancer, and leave Friday with the system in a better state than we found it.
