Three kinds of operational information belonged back on the office monitors.
One screen in the lobby would show the general system-health dashboard. Monitors above the developers would show the automated test system. A screen near the search team would show a metric for search speed.
The internal dashboard addresses and exact office layout are not published here. The useful record is what the team chose to make visible and where it placed each signal.
The health dashboard provided a broad view. The automated tests showed whether expected product behavior was passing. The search metric gave the team closest to search a direct view of customer-facing latency.
These monitors were not a replacement for alerts or detailed investigation. A wall display could show that a number had moved or a check had failed. Engineers still needed logs, traces, system access, and an incident process to find the cause.
The screens did make current system state part of the normal office environment. Developers did not have to open a separate monitoring tool to notice that search had slowed down. Visitors and leaders could see that service health was measured. The operations team could point to the same display when discussing whether a problem was new or ongoing.
The word “restore” matters. These displays had existed before and were being put back after a meeting. The source does not explain why they had been removed or stopped working. It only documents the decision to return them.
At the end of 2012, Shutterstock had more than 23 million images in its collection and had delivered 76 million paid downloads during the year. Search speed and service availability were direct parts of the ecommerce experience at that scale.
