I made the decision.
Given Peek's current financing problems, it is best for me to take a new position. I have spent weeks going through the options.
The short version:
- Facebook is too technical. I am not interested enough in learning to program.
- Shutterstock is a great career opportunity and an interesting skill set.
- Reality Check Networks is entrepreneurial, fun, and something I can be passionate about.
I took Reality Check.
The job gives me a chance to be incredibly involved and creative. The company works in data centers, which is a space I actually enjoy, and I will be the CTO.
I turn twenty-six in less than two weeks. Four years ago I was making $45,000 a year, living three thousand miles away, and eating a steady diet of beef jerky and chicken wings.
I have no clue what I will be doing four years from now, but I bet my life will not be any less exciting or any more settled.
I can make the appropriate safe move then. I will still be me, still be impressive, still be marketable, and I will also be the right age for middle management ;).
Until then I would rather work hard, feel driven again, and take the opportunity to do something disruptive in a space I enjoy.
I sent the note to two people who had helped me think through the options and thanked them for all the advice. Then I signed it, “Xoxo chris.”
That is the decision.
