The mountain still had snow, so the season was not over.
A friend had just come back from Arapahoe Basin and reported a decent base with soft snow all day. His plan was to go again Sunday or Memorial Day, arrive early or camp, bring a grill, ski, drink beer, and get some sun.
Another friend had access to a 12-person tent.
That turned the email subject into a real place: "The Beach @ Arapahoe Basin." The Beach was the row of parking spots along the lower mountain where people set up chairs, grills, coolers, and whatever else made spring skiing last all day.
It was exactly the kind of loose Colorado plan that could grow through reply-all. Pick a day. Volunteer a grill. Invite more people. Decide whether the giant tent is a good idea after somebody has already offered it.
My archive does not include a sent reply, so I cannot claim I slept in that tent or skied on Monday. The invitation belongs in the record because it shows what was available just outside work. Beatport could be busy, servers could need attention, and there was still a group trying to get one more day on the mountain.
Four days earlier, my ski account had tried to sell me next season's Epic Pass. It showed zero reward points and a long list of future benefits. The A-Basin thread was simpler. The snow was good now. Someone had a tent. Someone else had a grill.
Colorado made it possible to treat Memorial Day like winter and summer at the same time.
Ski first. Grill after. Sit in the sun until everybody was ready to leave.
