Westar Aerospace bought SimAuthor for $8 million in cash.
The deal closed on March 1. QinetiQ announced it publicly on March 27.
SimAuthor was a Boulder software company that built flight-data visualization and simulation tools. Its software turned recorded aircraft data into a replay people could use for analysis, safety, training, and other aviation work. Westar was part of QinetiQ North America.
The announcement also named SimAuthor's Boulder and Washington offices and its military and aviation customers.
I joined SimAuthor in 2004. By the time of the sale, I was running the network and systems for an office of about sixty people. Windows and Linux servers, databases, workstations, engineering labs, production services, firewalls, VPN access, security systems, and the in-house data center were all on my side of the building.
The public announcement had the clean company version: buyer, seller, product, customers, and price. My version was the Monday list. Engineers needed the lab. Employees needed their accounts. Production needed to stay online. The VPN and firewall rules still had to work.
I had spent the previous two years rebuilding the network and moving the data center in-house to improve availability and cut cost. My resume dates that work to the 2004 through 2006 job. It does not make March 27 the finish date for every infrastructure project.
The company changed owners. The systems did not get the day off.
